About Us
The company properly known as the Oakhurst Independant Hose Co. No. 1 was organized on April 14,1913. Thirteen persons were present at the gathering, and a charter was signed on April 23, of that year. Prior to the organization of the department $25 was collected and a hose and reel were purchased. The biggest single item was a donation of a Hook and Ladder from Deal Fire Co. No. 1.
The Hose and Reel were stored in the Elberon Council building, now the Rekeda Dance Studio, on Monmouth Road until our first firehouse was constructed in 1917. It was built on the site of Marcus Coon's Blacksmith Shop by George Luke and William Tallman. The construction took three weeks, using 42,000 bricks.
This firehouse served as our home until 1967 when our present firehouse on Larkin Place was opened. Station 2, on Deal Road, was opened in 1987 to serve the quickly developing areas of the district West of State Route 35. An addition was added to Station 1 in 1997 to house additional offices for the Fire Department and First Aid Squad and to provide additional room in the existing firehouse for the expanding Bureau of Fire Prevention headed by Fire Marshal and 1982 Chief Timothy J. Smith.
